💥 Is your dog afraid of fireworks?
💥 Does your dog shiver and shake at every bang?
💥 Are you feeling sorry for your pup all night long?
You’re not alone! It’s estimated that 60% of dogs are visibly distressed with fireworks. But what can you do to help?
Most people believe that there isn't a lot you can do to help your dog, but that's not true!
There is of course all the basics, such as;
Take your dog for an early walk in the daylight, and then keep them indoors.
Fill your dog’s water bowl (dogs drink more when worried).
Close your curtains and turn on the lights to mask the flashes.
Put some music, the TV or radio on to mask the noises.
Ensure your dog’s safe place is filled with adaptil spray and the scent of you (worn PJ’s or woolly jumpers).
Let your dog hide, and provide plenty of praise and cuddles.
Stay calm yourself and act normal.
And here is a preparation check list for you
Have you made sure your microchip details are up to date?
Is your dog is wearing an ID tag with your name and address on?
Have you prepared something tasty for your dog, such as their Kong or Licki Mat?
Have you got lots of treats to keep things positive?
This is normally where people leave it, and for many dogs, that's not enough! There is more you can do to really help your dog snooze their way through the fireworks, as if they're not even happening!
For two to three weeks before fireworks typically start, play 3 minutes of firework noises on a low volume (YouTube is easy enough), and regularly reward your dog with treats. Do this three times each evening, and gradually increase the volume as you get closer to bonfire night / New Years.
This will help them get used to the firework noises so that they become normal, and by adding treats you are also making it really positive for them.
Now, for some dogs, even those fake firework noises at a low volume will be much too scary, but don't worry! You can't give up yet!
It is likely that your dog just needs a little more preparation and support, and I can give you that!
