Our pets love their gardens, don’t they! But I’d your garden as fun as it can be? And is it safe for them?
Make sure that your garden has…
A place to sunbathe
A place to relax (think waterproof, with a nice comfy bed in it!)
A place to explore (for cats, they like to be up high!)
A place to hide (under bushes or in long grass)
A place to play! For dogs, make sure they have space to chase a ball, and to play tug! For cats, they love feathers, or you could tie a toy to swing from a tree
Extra fun!
Dogs - and some cats - love to play in water. Water fountains, sprinklers, or paddling pools can be great fun. Make sure pools and ponds have a shallow end or an easy exit (for both your dog and wildlife)
A place to dig! Both dogs and cats love to dig. You could use a sand pit and bury treats or toys for them to find.
If you really want your furry friend to enjoy their garden, providing enrichment is a must! I’ve spoken tons about enrichment on various blogs, so I won’t go into too much detail, but I did want to mention a few things that you can grow in your garden for your dog and cat to enjoy! For dogs and cats, wheat grass is great! For cats, catnip and cat mint are amazing!
Safety!
Avoid treating the grass with chemicals such as weed killer, especially if your dog or cat eats the grass or even eats treats on the grass.
Did you know a third of pet insurance claims for puppies where for poisoning?
There are many unsafe plants, including lillies, daffodils, foxglove, and yew. Make sure all yours are safe!
