Make Your Own Calming Treats - Recipes

Firework season can be a stressful time for dogs. The loud noises and unexpected bursts of light can trigger anxiety, leaving your furry friend feeling scared and uneasy. While creating a safe space and using calming aids are effective strategies, one often overlooked method is offering homemade calming treats. These treats not only serve as a tasty distraction but can also include ingredients known to promote relaxation in dogs.

Here are a few DIY calming treat recipes that are easy to make and can help soothe your dog during firework season.

1. Peanut Butter and Chamomile Bites

Chamomile is well-known for its calming properties in humans, and it can have a similar effect on dogs. This recipe combines the soothing effects of chamomile with the irresistible taste of peanut butter, making it a perfect treat for anxious pups.

- 1/4 cup peanut butter (unsalted, xylitol-free)

- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

- 1/2 cup brewed chamomile tea, cooled

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 175°C and line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and oats together.

3. Add the peanut butter, applesauce, and brewed chamomile tea. Stir until a dough forms.

4. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into small shapes using a cookie cutter.

5. Place the treats on the baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

6. Let the treats cool completely before serving them to your dog.

2. Pumpkin and Lavender Biscuits

Lavender is another herb known for its calming effects. Combined with pumpkin, which is gentle on the stomach and high in fiber, these biscuits are both soothing and nutritious.

5. Place the biscuits on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until firm.

6. Allow the biscuits to cool completely before offering them to your dog.

Tips for Success

- Introduce Treats Gradually: If your dog hasn’t had these ingredients before, introduce the treats gradually to ensure they don’t have any adverse reactions.

- Consult Your Vet: If you are at all concerned with what your dog is allowed to eat, your vet can confirm the appropriate dosage and ensure there are no potential interactions with any medications your dog may be taking.

- Storage: Store these homemade treats in an airtight container. Some treats may need to be refrigerated, especially those with fresh ingredients like pumpkin or egg, to maintain their freshness.

- Monitor Your Dog: Even though these treats are designed to be calming, it’s important to monitor your dog after they consume them, especially if it’s their first time trying the recipe.
